BMW revealed their first MPV concept, which is called the Active Tourer. The BMW Active Tourer measures 4,350 mm in length, 1,833 mm in width, and 1,576 mm in height. The Active Tourer previews BMW's future MPV, which will probably go on sale same market segment as the Mercedes B Class and the Volkswagen Golf Plus. The BMW Active Tourer is powered by the eDrive drivetrain, which was premiered by the i8 concept. This means that the BMW Active Tourer comes with an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and an intelligent motor management system. The premium compact MPV offers a raised seating position, plenty of interior space, and a generous luggage compartment. The BMW Active Tourer shows a new center console design, a full-color Head-Up Display, and an innovative panoramic sunroof that extends across the whole roof of the MPV.

The laminated glass of the roof can be made crystal-clear or heavily tinted at the push of a button. The rear seats of the BMW Active Tourer have a 40:20:40 split-fold design.

BMW's Active Tourer is designed as a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), which has an electric-only range of up to 20 miles (30 km). Its powertrain includes a 1.5-litre TwinPower turbocharged petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor. The internal combustion engine works the Active Tourer's front wheels, while the electric motor powers the MPV's rear axle.

BMW's official specs say that the Active Tourer has a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp. Apparently, the Active Tourer concept can accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 8 seconds, and it can reach a top speed of 200 km/h (125 mph). BMW's official efficiency figures say that the Active Tourer has a fuel consumption of less than 2.5 litres per 100 kilometers (113 mpg imp), a less than 60 g/km CO2 emissions. To maximize the electric range of the Active Tourer, BMW equips it with the ECO PRO mode, which reduces energy consumption of the ancillary units.
