Mercedes GLS Info

 »  »  »

Mercedes has long been rumored to plan a rival for BMW's X6, and today we have its name, the GLS. The British press published the initial info on the Mercedes GLS, which will be a coupe-like SUV based on the ML (M Class). In fact, Merc's GLS and the third-generation M-class will share the same platform with the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee. Mercedes is expected to launch the GLS in 2014, so don't go running for your checkbooks just yet.

The GLS will probably share its engine with the Mercedes ML, which means it will be sold with a choice between a 3.0-liter V6 diesel, a 3.5-litre V6 petrol and a 4.6 V8 petrol engine. We can also speculate that Mercedes will eventually build and AMG version of the GLS.

A possible Mercedes GLS AMG will enter the same market segment as the BMW X6M. The AMG GLS will be powered by the 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine.

Mercedes could also offer the GLS as a diesel hybrid. It will have the same powertrain as Merc's E300 Hybrid, which will have its world debut at the Frankfurt auto show this fall.

We'll have more info on the Mercedes GLS as soon as it's available.
