The Toyota GT 86 has been revealed over the weekend, ahead of its world debut, which will take place at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The highly anticipated GT 86, called simply the 86 on some markets, is the production version of the FT-86 and the FT-86 II concepts. The two concepts are the result of collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, which spawned two additional models: the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ STI. The Toyota GT 86 is a 2+2 sports coupe, with a front engine, rear-wheel-drive architecture, which was inspired by the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86. It measures 4,240 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width, 1,300 mm in height and has a 2,570 mm wheelbase. To power their new GT 86, Toyota uses and engine developed by Subaru. It's a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, boxer engine equipped with D-4S direct injection.

The Toyota GT 86 is rated with an output of 147 kW (200 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 6,600 rpm.

Toyota will offer two transmission options for the GT 86: a six-speed manual with a short-throw lever, or six-speed automatic gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

So far, Toyota did not disclose the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration time of the GT 86.

Its top speed is a mystery too at this point.

The Toyota GT 86 price has not been announced yet, but the Japanese carmaker says it will put it on sale sometime in June 2012.

Toyota developed the GT 86 to be a driver-focused machine, with precise and fast response to all of the driver's inputs. One of the main goals when developing the GT 86 was to make a compact lightweight vehicle, with a relatively small, but high-revving petrol engine. Toyota's GT 86 has a 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution, and a low center of gravity (460mm) thanks to its flat engine.

The Toyota GT 86 sits on 17-inch alloys, a MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a double wishbones one at the rear. It comes with twin exhausts, a rear spoiler, muscular wheel arches and an overall aggressive look. For the interior of the 86, Toyota chose a small steering wheel (only 365mm in diameter) covered in buckskin, a three-meter instrument cluster that frames a large tachometer. To enhance the performance feel of the GT 86, Toyota gave it carbon-effect trim parts, a black roof lining, red stitching, airplane-style rocker switches and aluminum pedals.

Here are some features of the 2-liter engine powering the GT 86. It comes with separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, and has a 12.5:1 compression ratio, Subaru opted for and equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm. For a better power delivery, the Toyota GT 86 is equipped with a limited slip differential. Its ABS and traction control systems (VCS) can be completely switched off, or so does its official specs say. Watch the Toyota GT 86 live on video lower down this page.
