Volkswagen revealed the new Design Vision GTI concept during the annual enthusiasts' meeting on the shores of Lake Worthersee in Reifnitz, Austria. The Volkswagen Design Vision GTI concept is based on the seventh generation of the Golf, but comes with countless bespoke features. The most striking exterior design feature of the Golf GTI Design Vision includes the C-pillars and side sills which have been extended out as autonomous body elements. As a result, the Design Vision Golf GTI features a wider track and wheels. VW's Design Vision GTI measures 4,253 mm in length (15 mm less than the production GTI), 1,385 mm in height (57 mm lower that the standard GTI) and 1,870 wide (71 mm wider). The Design Vision GTI has a 1,595 mm track at the front and a 1,579 mm one at the rear.

It is equipped with 20-inch alloys and ceramic brakes.

The Design Vision GTI is fitted with new headlights, which are pushed backwards into the bonnet. To power the Design Vision GTI, Volkswagen chose a 3.0-litre V6 TSI engine which, thanks to direct injection and turbocharging, develops 503 PS at 6,500 rpm and 560 Nm of torque between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. This is quite a lot for a car this size. The power of the engine is sent to all four wheels via a DSG transmission.

Volkswagen says that the GTI Design Vision is able to accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds.

At the interior, the Design Vision GTI has minimum amount of buttons and switchers. It comes with a black, red and white color scheme, various carbon and Alcantara trim parts and an X-shaped cross member that replaces the rear seats. VW also equipped the Design Vision GTI with an on-board camera, and a large display that shows race information (the track, lap times, etc.). The car is also able to communicate with other vehicles on the track to calculate that status of the race in real time.

The Volkswagen Design Vision GTI is not currently scheduled for production.
