Volkswagen Golf GTI R in the works

Car Magazine reported yesterday that even a faster version of the GTI is in the works, named Volkswagen Golf GTI-R. The Volkswagen Golf GTI-R is expected to be premiered this autumn at the Frankfurt Auto Show and will probably hit the showrooms sometime next year. The rumor is the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R will be powered by a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine developing in the region of 270 hp.

The British magazine says the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R will feature all-wheel-drive. With AWD and almost 270 hp the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R will become a serious competitor for the new Focus RS.

AWD systems are usually heavy, so the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R will probably go through a weight loss program. What exactly this program includes is not very clear yet.
