New info regarding the 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI VII surfaced the web today, and it looks like the next generation model will get more power and improved performance figures. According to our British sources, the 2013 Golf GTI will be powered by the same 2.0-liter turbo engine, but the EA888 unit will undergo several modifications. The final result will be an output of 220 hp (223 PS / 164 kW) which represents a 13 hp improvement over the current output of 207 hp. Apparently, VW is working on a new valve lift system for the seventh generation of the Golf GTI, which is borrowed from Audi.

The same sources report that VW's Golf VII GTI will also feature a new electronically controlled mechanical locking differential, which will also

equip the future generation of the Golf R. The new diff will improve the handling characteristics of the 2013 Golf GTI, and hopefully, reduce torque steer.

At this year's Worthersee event, VW premiered the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet concept, alongside a GTI cabrio concept. Recent developments indicate that the Golf R cabrio is more likely to get into production than the open-top GTI. If this is the case, the Golf R convertible will deliver 270 PS and 350 Nm of torque from the 2.0 TSI petrol engine. With this unit under its hood,

the VW Golf R cabrio will be able to rocket from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than six seconds and it will have a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

We'll have more details on the 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI VII as soon as it's available.
