The long-rumored Volkswagen Golf GTI cabrio has been unveiled today, ahead of its official premiere, which will take place next week at the 2012 Geneva motor show. The open-top version of the hot hatch was first seen as a concept at the 2011 Worthersee show, and it will go on sale just in time for you to enjoy it this summer. Volkswagen did not announce the Volkswagen Golf GTI cabrio's price yet. Just as the three-door hatchback, the Golf GTI cabriolet is powered by the 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine, which is rated at 155 kW / 210 PS and 280 Nm of torque from 1,700 rpm to 5,300 rpm. When VW removed the roof of the Golf GTI to make it a convertible, it had to add extra reinforcement to its body. This made the car heavier, which had a slight negative impact on its performance.

The Golf GTI cabrio is bit slower then the hard-top, with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 237 km/h / 147 mph (DSG: 235 km/h / 146 mph).

In terms of efficient, Volkswagen rates the Golf GTI cabrio with a 7.6 l/100 km fuel consumption on the combined cycle and a 177 g/km CO2 emissions level (DSG: 7.7 l/100 km and 180 g/km CO2). The 2.0-liter engine of the cabrio GTI features direct petrol injection, four valves per cylinder and a high torque characteristic.

VW will sell the Golf GTI cabriolet with either a 6-speed manual transmission or the DSG 6-speed DSG double clutch gearbox. The equipment list of the GTI convertible also includes ESP with electronic differential locks (EDS), and an XDS transverse differential lock.

The canvas roof of the open-top GTI is operated electro-hydraulically and it takes 9.5 seconds to open and 11 seconds to close. It can be operated only if you're driving below the 30 km/h mark. Even though the fabric roof is stored in the boot of the car, the new cabriolet still offers 250 liters of luggage space in the back. It comes with all the trademark GTI design elements, including badges, bumpers and rear diffuser. Apart from those, the VW Golf GTI Cabriolet also comes with LED DRLs, 18-inch alloys and chromed tailpipes.

At the interior, Volkswagen equipped the cabrio GTI with sport leather seats, a leather steering wheel, an aluminum-look gearshift lever, Climatronic, electric windows and mirrors and the RCD 210 radio-CD system.

In terms of safety, the GTI cabrio features roll-over protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a knee airbag.
